Photos The Mellstock Quire July 2022 Estuary Players are delighted to be returning to Powderham Castle with their successful Production of The Mellstock Quire which premiered in Topsham in November 2021. It is a play with music which was inspired by and adapted from the Thomas Hardy novel, Under the Greenwood Tree, by Clare Philbrock. The setting is the Wessex Village of Mellstock in 1870. Life has gone on much the same there for generations. At the heart of the village is the Quire whose singing accompanies the community through the year. The seasons come and go with their predictable rhythms, but change is afoot with the arrival of the new Parson, Reverend Maybold, whose plans to modernise worship at the Church do not include the Quire. And what about the new School Mistress, Miss Fancy Day? She is refined, educated and fair of face; surely, she must be in need of a husband, but will she marry to please her father, or to improve herself, or for love. The story of the Quire begins in Winter and unfolds during the changing seasons of the following year and beyond: Spring, Summer, Autumn and then Midsummer.
